Single Camera Techniques
We had a workshop on Monday being introduced to 3-point lighting. The basic idea is to have a key light, a fill light and a back light. The key light is the main source of lighting to illuminate the subject. The fill light is placed to the other side of the subject to fill the shadows cast by the key light. The back light separates the subject from the background and creates an attractive glow around it. Other lighting we may think of using other than studio light are practicals (light available, such as lamps), reflected light or natural light.

After learning the basics we were given the task to light 5 scenes in interesting and creative ways. We were able to control the light with various tools: reflectors to bounce light off, barn doors on the lights to control the amount of light giving out or to create a strip of light, scrim to soften the light, filters or natural density sheets to colour or darken the light, and we could focus and strengthen the light on the lights themselves.
