Direction Unit: Coursework

Summer is Dead
by Johanna & Myself

The first filming project after a long summer away. After being given the title "Summer is Dead", we paired off to come up with an idea for a 3-minute short film. Jo & I decided to film a short documentary investigating the murder of a girl named Summer. We knew that we could easily film and edit together scenes which feature: a presenter, an interview with a witness, an interview with a family member and a reconstruction and we were able to get clear sound from each and use a voice-over. This was all achievable in the time we had available, whilst also having a beginning, middle and end.

Firstly, we filmed our shots outdoors for the reconstruction scene using a variety of long lens shots and making the image soft focus. Then, I was a witness at the scene outdoors; afterwards, we recorded some sound effects for the reconstruction scene of feet walking through leaves. For the interview with the family member, we decided a sofa indoors was more appropriate and relaxed. Initially, we had planned to have the presenter outdoors walking towards the camera in a wide shot, but, as we knew we wouldn't be able to pick up any sound, we moved indoors and used a corridor.

After a quick edit, we converted the reconstruction scenes to black and white, added some moody piano music and the voice-over. Finally, it all came together and I was happy with the result. The task brought me back to thinking about everything from the first semester; creating a story, camera techniques, sound design and editing. All the basics I need to keep at the front of my mind for this coming semester.
