Direction Unit: Research

Chosen television drama, with research into my idea

I have chosen 'Dexter' to take my 3-minute script from and re-direct. I am inclined to take the first 3 minutes from episode 1 series 1 where we first meet Dexter. I know that if I pick this scene, it can be clearly presented as a mini-series episode and hopefully hook the audience in whilst watching it. I have thought about different ideas as to how I would introduce Dexter as a character and how I would build his profile through my choice of shots, lighting, sound and action in the scene.

I have also thought about location; in the actual series, the opening shot is based down a bustling, bright Miami strip and we are inside his dark, anonymous car driving to his next victim, which highlights his separation to normal society and how we are taking the ride with him. However, in my version, he could be on foot and even stalking his victim down a quiet, suburban street. I may decide not to introduce his face until last minute and make him more mysterious or I could be bold and show that he is not afraid of hiding or getting caught.

As I watch other programmes, I look out for different directing styles and how the camera moves to set the pace of the scene. I would like to try some "daring" and creative shots and try and not be too obvious. I want to add some colour such as dark green and orange, perhaps in the way I may be able to light the shots and use street lamps and shop lights or in post-production to add a surreal element.

Another point I have thought about is sound, in the original they use a "theme" for Dexter in the form of a score. Ideally, I would have someone compose a dark, ominous and slightly psychotic piece of music. I'm also thinking about different costume I would put Dexter's character in; whether he is going to look professional or rugged and unkempt.

Excuse the subtitles...
