Direction Unit: Research

Dexter

Here is a some research into Dexter, my chosen television drama to re-create for the Direction Unit. Firstly, an overview of the storyline:

"Meet Dexter Morgan. By day he's a blood spatter pattern expert for the Miami Metro police department. But by night - he takes on an entirely different persona: serial killer. But Dexter isn't your average serial killer as he only kills people who fit a very prolific and precise "moral code" taught to him by his late father Harry (he didn't kill Harry, honest), and developed very thoroughly throughout each kill."

The show debuted in 2006 on Showtime in the U.S., starring Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan. Screenwriter James Manos, Jr. developed, produced and wrote the first episode for television, largely based around a novel written by Jeff Lindsay titled Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Before doing so, James worked as a co-producer and writer on the first season of The Sopranos in 1999.

Dexter is written and produced by a team of people including;  Daniel Cerone, Clyde Phillips and Melissa Rosenberg with Daniel Licht composing the score for the television series, previously working on thrillers and crime films. Melissa Rosenberg also wrote the film Step Up in 2006 and has adapted and written the screenplay for the Twilight film and it's sagas from the Stephenie Meyer's novels, she has also worked on the writing team for The O.C.. An additional writer and producer includes Scott Buck, who previously wrote and produced episodes of Six Feet Under, which also stars Michael C. Hall and features a title sequence created by Digital Kitchen, the same production company responsible for the title sequence for Dexter.

Other main characters that won't be appearing in my 3-minute drama include:
  • Debra Morgan (played by Jennifer Carpenter) - Dexter's sister and detective and Miami Metro Homicide
  • Harry Morgan (played by James Remar) - Dexter's father as seen in flashbacks or in Dexter's mind
  • Lt. Maria LaGuerta (played by Lauren VĂ©lez) - Dexter's boss, always tries to be fair but is usually taken for the "bad guy" when running the department. Has a soft spot for Dexter
  • Sgt. Angel Batista (played by David Zayas) - The head detective in the field, a kind-hearted and respectful man
  • Vince Masuka (played by C.S Lee) - The office "joker", a filthy-minded fellow forensic department worker
  • Joey Quinn (played by Desmond Harrington) - Has relations with Debra and suspicions against Dexter
